吴始年教授,“西外学者”特聘教授。1982年毕业于西安外国语学院,获英语语言文学学士学位;1988年毕业于美国北亚利桑那大学,获英语作为第二语言教学硕士学位;1988年就读美国特拉华大学攻读理论语言学博士学位;1995年毕业于北亚利桑那大学,获应用语言学博士学位。1995年起先后任美国南伊利诺大学英语系讲师,美国加州蒙特雷国际研究院教育语言学研究生院助理教授,美国加州州立大学蒙特雷分校专业教育中心客座助理教授,中国西北大学外国语学院访问教授,德国格蒙特教育大学英语系访问教授,英国金斯顿大学语言学系访问教授,美国密歇根州宏谷州立大学区域研究中心东亚学科主任,英语系教授,系副主任,应用语言学硕士项目主任;2003年任西安外国语大学客座教授,2007年任西安外国语大学英语教授,2009年至今任西安外国语大学讲座教授,特聘教授。
开设的课程有《教育语言学》,《社会语言学》,《二语习得理论》《二语测试》《研究方法论》、《语义学》。学术论文发表在国内外刊物和丛书中。参与《新世纪汉英大辞典》英文编辑工作。美国教育考试服务机构(Educational Testing Service)客座学者和TOEFL、Praxis、TExES命题、审题人。
