Fire Sower——Li Dazhao

Li Dazhao was arrested on April 6, 1927, when the Manchurian Warlord controlled Beijing. After reaching a so-called “complete understanding” with the ministerial group formed by the imperialist powers, Zhang Zuolin sent the armed  police to attack the old Russian barracks in Dongjiaominxiang. As a result, Li Dazhao and other revolutionaries were arrested and detained in the Peiping Detention Center in Xijiaominxiang. Finally, on April 28, 1927, Manchurian Warlord formed the so-called “Provisional Council of Military Court” and sentenced Li Dazhao and other 19 people to hanging.

Li Dazhao was kept in prison for 22 days, during which the enemy tortured him by puncturing bamboo sticks into his nails and forcibly peeling all his nails off. Even worse, he was experiencing deliberately excruciating torture in prison, and the enemy tried every means to extract some party secrets from him, but he never disclosed them.

In prison, he left for posterity Prison Readme of his revolutionary experiences. There are three drafts of the article, with the same content but some slight differences in wording. He said: “Since receiving education in youth, Zhao has vowed to devote to the cause of national liberation, to practice what I believe, and to do what I know. Whether they were merits or not, I have no time to consider. Now that having been arrested, I can only speak sincerely and frankly. If this is regarded as a crime, I should be entirely responsible for it. I hope that the authorities will treat these patriotic youths leniently without being implicated, and then I will be very grateful!”

In this solemn and stirring rhetoric, Li Dazhao still remembered the youth, hoping that the authorities of Manchurian Warlord could go easy on the patriotic youth. This may be the last bit of effort that Li Dazhao, as a teacher, can do for his students.
