When working in Beijing, Premier Zhou Enlai made clothes for the first time in order to meet foreign guests and attend conferences. As such, he went to Beijing “Hongdu” Clothing Store. In the store, the clerk introduced, “This is a well-known clothing store in China.” Having heard the clerk’s words, Zhou Enlai smiled, “I came here due to its popularity.”

Afterwards, the clerk recommended various foreign fabrics like British woolen cloth and Australian woolen cloth. However, Zhou Enlai shook his head and said, “I want Chinese materials, no matter it is fabric or wool must be made of Chinese materials.” Having talked with the clerk, he bought a set of cyan woolen tunic suit, a blue khaki jacket and a gray plain weave tunic suit.

Zhou Enlai worn these clothes until 1963, which were always neat and crisp. A decade later, the clothes looked still the same. There is no doubt that he had his own way to keep his clothes decent, that is, he had two sleeves which must be put on his arms in the process of work. In doing so, the cloth in his elbows can be protected.

However, he worked nearly eighteen hours a day, so the abrasion of the clothes is inevitable. Therefore, he sent it to the “Hongdu” Clothing Store and had them darned by the tailor. Although his clothes were a little bit old, they looked still neat and crisp after being ironed. With those clothes on, the handsome appearance and unrestrained behavior of Zhou Enlai did not detract him from the demeanor of the premier of great power at all when meeting the guests.
